I know I don’t look very athletic. Truthfully at 5’3” with a small frame and add to that winning the genetic lottery for knees that make my ortho doc grimace, it really limits my range for sports. As luck would have it I married a man who loves sports. Doesn’t matter what kind he’ll watch it and if he can he’ll play it. Don’t believe me? I woke up on my honeymoon to the soft gentle whisper of Tiger Woods putting on the PGA Tour. That is another story though, because he is athletic it lead to me playing competitive league volley ball for years and children that played just about every sport I could imagine.
Between summer sports and school sports starting I thought I’d touch on some must have essential oil products that can make all the difference!
Soothing Blend Rub: A soothing blend is perfect when you are seeking temporary comfort for tired and sore muscles and joints associated with strenuous physical activity or discomfort associated with advanced aging. Just massage a pea size amount where you need it. If you have really sensitive skin, add some lotion. You’ll want to avoid applying this in really sensitive areas and make sure to wash your hands well with soap and water afterwardsNaturally Blue Tansy + Wintergreen + Helichrysum = Soothing Comfort! Respiratory Blend: Wonderful to help you breathe easier, soothe airways and clear passageways. One of my friend’s daughter started using it before she plays basketball and it works so well that the coach always asks her if she has it on before she hits the court and most of the team uses it too! You can just inhale this, put a drop on your jersey near your face or mix with Fractionated Coconut Oil and apply on your chest.Essential oils that keep you alert with clear airways is a basketball team's secret weapon! Peppermint: This oil has many uses, it promotes healthy respiratory function like the respiratory blend, and it also helps alleviate stomach upset but where it is a clear winner for sports is twofold, when you inhale it instantly makes you more awake and alert (handy in calculous) and if you put a drop on the base of your neck it is cooling. At one of the tournaments we went to, everyone was so hot from all of the rounds that we tried it and before I knew it complete strangers were coming up and asking for some.
Protective Blend: For athletes it is so important that they stay healthy. So a drop of this on the tongue before they get on the plane, practice or a game is key in protecting from environmental threats and to maintain healthy immune function. Some more progressive schools will spray down their wrestling mats with it too.
Melaleuca, also known as Tea Tree oil is another must have. It is amazing Lots of moms make sure to apply this to hands, nails and feet when using shared showers and even mix it with water and spray down their wrestlers for mat burns and skin irritations and to enhance immunity from close contact. Be very careful choosing a Melaleuca, especially if it is labeled Tea Tree oil and most are mainly synthetics which can cause rashes and sensitivities.Moms with wrestlers know that Melaleuca is a must have to soothe and protect. Lavender: Last but certainly not least is my favorite oil Lavender. Its calm and relaxing properties can help with relaxing sleep even if there is a big event the next day or to ease nervous feelings before an event. Apply to the back of the neck and temples can help ease tensions. As an added bonus, Lavender is also soothing to skin irritations and to help the skin recover quickly. Like Melaleuca, it is increasingly difficult to find pure Lavender oil. I’ve played with many different Lavender oils and the ones from France are far superior to anything else. Sadly there are more oils labeled from France than the country actually exports.
Personally I love to have all of these oils in a bag to have on hand for sporting events so I’m always prepared. I sure wish I’d had these when I was still playing volleyball!
