Does anyone remember the old Brady Bunch episode where Peter Brady says “pork chops and applesauce”? I always think about it when I’m cooking pork chops and when I do, baked apples are always on the menu. I know apple sauce is the tradition but this way I can combine dinner and dessert, and who doesn’t like that?
Love for baked apples come from my mom, they were always a special treat for her and bring back happy memories. Now that she lives with us I like to try and make things that make her happy. Unfortunately, she has some diet restrictions and add to that that I prefer to go down the organic, no refined foods or sugar path, it took a little experimenting to find one that wasn’t too sweet, tasted good and but didn’t have any ingredients that I try and keep out of the house (mostly). I finally found one that everyone likes and so with my picky eaters I think it is a success. Hopefully you will to!
Essential Cinnamon Baked Apples
For each apple you’ll need:
1 Organic Granny Smith Apples
1 teaspoon Organic Unpasteurized Raw Honey**
1 drop Cinnamon Essential Oil*
1 teaspoon butter
Pinch Kosher Salt
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Core the apples taking care to not go all the way through the bottom. It should look like a circle on top that tapers down to a point about 1/2″ from the bottom of the apple. Make sure to remove core and seeds. Put apple in ramekin.
Mix the honey, a drop of cinnamon essential oil* and a pinch of kosher salt.
Take honey mixture and spread inside the apple, coating all sides.
Take a Tablespoon of butter and cut into 6 sticks. Put one stick inside the apple.
Put in oven and bake for 30 minutes. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Recipe is for one apple so you can easily increase to the number you need.
** The best raw unpasteurized raw honey comes from local farmers. Alternatively try health food stores. Honey from the grocery store is generally not good for you.
*Note: All essential oils aren’t created equally. Especially for internal use check the label to see if it is safe. Why?…Essential Oil Grades
